Project Overview:

Conducted a needs assessment of all of the instructor-led and support documentation for the Construction and Designers. The goal was to move instructor-led to 90 percent eLearning and interactive job aids. The project has over 60 mini projects and is approximately 75% complete as of today’s date.

The client is very happy with the management of the project as well as the creative design elements that have been delivered.

Training Challenge

Training new employees remains a time-consuming issue for any organization. Like many companies, this gas and electric company located in San Diego, CA, spent 6-8 weeks training new employees for the Design and Construction Management department. They realized many issues with their current approach to new employee training included:

  1. A large amount of content over 6-8 weeks that inhibited an employee’s opportunity to experience actual situations
  2. Lack of repeatable experience
  3. Inability to allow new and existing employees the ability to reference and refresh on core content
  4. Use of “tribal knowledge” as the basis for training

Our Solution

TrainSmart performed an in-depth assessment that allowed us to become intimate with the organization, their roles, the landscape, their challenges, and the current training. From this, we developed a curriculum and plan to design, develop, and implement instructor-led training, eLearning, user manuals, and job aids. Through intense project management activities, we ensured that courses that were related repeated the correct information and aligns with each other.

From the plan, we deployed a set of instructional designers armed and prepped with the assessment information and templates to ensure a cohesive approach, look and feel to all assets and deliverables. In this project, TrainSmart designed and developed the following training assets:

  • Over 35 eLearning modules
  • 6 ILTs
  • Over 45 job aids
  • 6 User manuals
